Hibiscus (Zobo)

Discover the Vibrant World of Hibiscus in Nigeria with UNR Agro Allied Ltd

Welcome to the fascinating realm of hibiscus farming in Nigeria, a sector that not only plays a significant role in the country’s economy but also holds great promise for the future. UNR Agro Allied Ltd is proud to be a part of this burgeoning industry, where the vibrant hibiscus flower, locally known as Zobo, is making its mark both domestically and internationally.

Nigeria’s Hibiscus Production: A Growing Industry

Nigeria is a major player in the global hibiscus market, ranking next to Sudan in production. The country’s northern states, including Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina, are leading in hibiscus cultivation. With a growing season of just 3 to 4 months, hibiscus farming offers a quick turnaround and significant economic benefits to the local communities.

Health Benefits and Diverse Uses

Hibiscus flowers are renowned for their numerous health benefits and diverse uses. Consumed as a Zobo drink, hibiscus aids in detoxification, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels and has anti-aging properties. It’s used in making hot and cold herbal beverages, jellies, and edible products. The flower is also a key raw material in the global confectioneries industry due to its nutritional value and health properties.

Economic Impact and Export Potential

Hibiscus farming is creating wealth for Nigerian communities, with farmers increasing their cultivation areas to meet the rising demand. The industry is estimated to be worth about $100 million, demonstrating its significant potential as a non-oil export commodity. Before a ban by the Mexican government, Nigeria exported 1,983 containers of hibiscus to Mexico alone, worth $35 million, underscoring its importance in the export markets.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its economic significance, hibiscus farming faces challenges such as fluctuating prices, farm invasions, and a lack of government support. However, the lifting of the export ban in 2022 has revitalized the industry, with farmers now engaging in massive production. One tonne of hibiscus is currently selling for N1.3m to N1.7m, making it an attractive crop for farmers.
