Welcome to the heart of Nigeria’s cocoa production, proudly presented by UNR Agro Allied Ltd. As the fourth largest cocoa-producing country in the world, Nigeria has a rich heritage and immense potential in cocoa farming, making it a key player in the global cocoa market.
Nigeria’s cocoa production is currently around 300,000 metric tonnes, to increase it to 500,000 tonnes by 2024. The country’s major cocoa-producing states include Ondo, Cross River, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Delta, Osun, and Oyo. Despite challenges, Nigerian cocoa is recognized for its quality, and continual efforts are being made to enhance farming practices, improve traceability, and ensure sustainability in the cocoa supply chain.
Efforts to modernize cocoa farming in Nigeria focus on leveraging climate-smart agriculture and initiatives to improve the quality and quantity of production. The TRACE project, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, aims to support cocoa farmers in six Nigerian states through climate-smart agriculture and improved traceability in cocoa supply chains.
Despite Nigeria’s vast potential in cocoa production, the industry faces challenges such as aging trees, low yields, and little agricultural mechanization. However, growth opportunities are immense, especially with initiatives like the Cocoa GAP handbook, which aims to educate farmers on best practices and smart adaptation strategies.
At UNR Agro Allied Ltd, we are dedicated to nurturing Nigeria’s cocoa legacy. We work closely with local farmers and leverage modern technologies and sustainable practices to produce high-quality cocoa. Our commitment extends to ensuring that Nigerian cocoa reaches its full potential in the global market, benefiting both local communities and the national economy.
